Der Familienname ist von dem Ortsnamen Drefahl abgeleitet . The family name derives from the name of the village Drefahl .

Während der Völkerwanderung im frühen Mittelalter gründeten slawische Bevölkerungsgruppen im Gebiet östlich der Elbe zahlreiche Orte. Deren Ortsnamen sind heute vielfach an den Endungen -in, -ow, -itz usw. zu erkennen. Auch das Dorf Drefahl ist eine solche slawische Gründung.

Dieser Name wird mit dem altslawischen Wort drwa = Holz bzw. drwal = Holzhacker in Verbindung gebracht.

Um 1200 begann eine Einwanderungswelle aus dem heutigen Niedersachsen und Westfalen in dieses unterbevölkerte Gebiet. Bei Niederlassungen in alten slawischen Dörfern wurden die alten Dorfnamen beibehalten, Neugründungen erhielten deutsche Namen.

During the great migration in the early middle age a Slavic population foundet many villages in the area east of the river Elbe. The names of those villages can be recognized today because of their endings like -in, -ow, -itz etc. Also the village Drefahl is such a Slavic foundation.

This name derives probably from the old-Slavic word drwa = wood resp. drwal = Lumberjack .

Around the year 1200 began an immigration wave from the western areas into this underpopulated country. If settlements took place in old Slavic villages the old names of the villages were used. New foundations received German names.

Auf dieser alten Karte (um 1600) wird das Dorf noch als DRAVAEL bezeichnet.

	Die Kirche des Dorfes Drefahl wird erstmals im Jahre 1534 urkundlich erwähnt.

		The church of the village Drefahl is mentioned in documents since the year 1534.

	Alter Feuerwehrschuppen mit Holzturm, der zum Aufhängen der Schläuche diente. Old house for the fire engine with a wooden tower for the water tubes.

		Rund 25 km südlich von Parchim liegt in einer kaum gestörten Naturlandschaft das Dorf Drefahl. Um die alte Kirche ist ein Dutzend Häuser angesiedelt, Bauernhäuser aus diesem Jahrhundert. Das Dorf befindet sich noch in einem Dornröschenschlaf. Ein Teil der Bauernhäuser ist verlassen und dem Verfall preisgegeben. Die Bewohner sind wohl in die Stadt abgewandert. Die Häuser warten auf bessere Zeiten, auf Eigentümer, die sie wieder zu einem neuen Leben erwecken. Auf den Weiden grasen Kühe, ein Feldhase hoppelt entlang der autoarmen Landstrasse, Störche stelzen durch die Wiesen. Im Feuerlöschteich neben der Kirche tummeln sich die Frösche. Eine bessere Zukunft könnte man sich in Form eines Erholungsgebietes für Stadtmenschen vorstellen. Die Autobahn Hamburg - Berlin ist nur wenige Kilometer vom Dorf entfernt, in gut einer Stunde ist man in beiden Großstädten. Einen mutigen Anfang hat bereits ein junges Wirteehepaar gemacht und einen neues “Drefahler Landgasthaus” eröffnet. Dies wäre ein guter Ausgangspunkt für einen Urlaub zur Erkundung der schönen mecklenburgischen Seen- und Kulturlandschaft.

About 15 miles south of the town of Parchim lies in a undisturbed natural landscape the village of Drefahl. Around the old church in the middle of the village, a dozen of farm houses are situated in a wide circle. The village seems to sleep. Some of the farm houses are deserted and start to fall apart. They wait for better times and owners who will restore them.

Cows are grazing on the meadows, a hare hops along the empty road and some storks look for a lunch.

A better future could be expected as a recreation are for stressed people of the big cities. The highway from Hamburg to Berlin passes the village in a distance of a few miles and allows to reach this cities within more than one hour.

A young couple has made a start and opened a brandnew “Drefahler Landgasthaus” (“Drefahl´s Country Inn”).

This would be a good starting point for a holiday in the beautiful landscape of the lakes and culture of Mecklenburg.
